Mobile Liquor Unit Seized, 1 Arrested

A team of Excise and police officials seized a mobile illicit liquor manufacturing unit near Koodapakkam here on Friday.

A team of Excise and police officials seized a mobile illicit liquor manufacturing unit near Koodapakkam here on Friday.

According to Tahsildar (excise) Kumaran, cans containing 300 litres of arrack, 50 cases (each containing 50 bottles of 180 ml capacity), fake IMFL labels, corks, essence used for making IMFL and mini-bottling unit kept in the mini-van were seized.

The team, on receiving information, intercepted the van near Koodapakkam. On seeing the officials, two persons who were in the vehicle tried to flee after abandoning the vehicle. The officials managed to arrest one of them, he was dentified as Kesavan (31). A search has been launched for the main accused Kathir alias Kathiresan (33) and his aide Siva. Kathiresan had been involved in similar cases on three other occasions.

The official said the total worth of seized items were estimated to be `4 lakh. The mini- van was also seized.

Tahsildar Kumaran said the accused persons used to manufacture a particular brand of IMFL and the fake liquor, brewed by using arrack, was sold to the outlets in neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu.
