A 10-day-old baby boy was found abandoned amid bushes along a water body at Athanur village near Arni on Friday.

The police rescued the baby and handed it over to the Social Welfare Department officials.

According to police, Subramani (55) of Athanur village heard a baby cry when he went to Periya Eri on the outskirts of the village. He ran towards that direction and found a child wrapped in a cloth lying in the bushes along the water body.

He immediately alerted the Village Administration Officer (VAO) E Illavarasan who, in turn, informed the policemen attached to the Arni Taluk Station.

The child was rescued and shifted to the Government Hospital in Arni by an 108 ambulance, said the police. “The child is less than 10 days old,” said a police officer of the station.

The police registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the person who abandoned the baby.

The child is now in the custody of the officials of the District Social Welfare Department.
