Virtually keeping the door open for alliance with all parties, barring the BJP, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday declared that his party would lead any front comprising parties which supported the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project and did not back ‘communal forces’.

The DMK supremo, who addressed the party’s tenth State conference which concluded here, said his party would align with those who supported the implementation of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project and opposed the emergence of ‘communalism’,

besides working to ensure social justice.

Recalling that the Sethusamudram scheme was a dream project of veteran leader late C N Annadurai, who wanted its implementation for the economic development of the State, Karunanidhi said the AIADMK had been opposing the project since it was taken up by the efforts of the DMK. The project was deliberately stopped by approaching the apex court, he said and claimed that when the Centre had come forward to implement it, the State had prevented it.

Much to the surprise of the DMK party cadre who were waiting for the announcement of a major decision, Karunanidhi, who earlier announced that the already existing political parties including IUML, VCK, PT and TMMK would find a place in the DMK-led front, added the Sethusamudram project as a condition which applies to all parties including the Congress, Left parties, PMK and MDMK. The DMDK led by actor Vijayakant too had not opposed the project.
