A 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for abetting the suicide of his newly-wed wife.

According to police, Sakthivel (23), of Karuthalakuruchi village near Kallakuruchi, had secretly married Kalaiselvi (25) of the same village on February 7 and the woman attempted suicide on Saturday.

Police said Kalaiselvi and Sakthivel were in love for seven years. However, Sakthivel’s relatives did not accept their relationship as the she was elder than him and belonged to another caste.

Meanwhile, Sakthivel decided to go abroad for a job and the couple got married without the knowledge of his parents on February 7 at a temple near their village. As Sakthivel’s mother and relatives opposed their marriage, the couple stayed at Kalaiselvi’s house.

A few days back, Sakthivel went to his house to see his mother but did not return. On Saturday, Kalaiselvi went to his house with her parents and requested him to come with her. However, Sakthivel refused and started abusing her. His mother Thangal (50), younger brother Sarathkumar (20) and a relative Arunachalam also abused her. They also attacked Kalaiselvi and her parents.

Depressed over this, Kalaiselvi went back home and consumed poison. Her parents found her lying unconscious in her room and rushed her to hospital.

Following this, Kalaiselvi lodged a complaint at the Kallakuruchi All Women Police Station.  Police filed a case and arrested Sakthivel on Saturday evening for pushing his wife to resort to the extreme step. They have also began a search for Thangal, Sarathkumar and Arunachalam, who were absconding.

In another incident, police arrested Antonysamy of Sowripalayam hamlet near Thirukoilur for demanding dowry and torturing his wife Jenova (25).

On Saturday, he, along with his father Michael, mother Lourdmary, brother Josemin and relative abused her and threw her out of their house. Following this, Jenova went to Tirukoilur All Women Police Station and lodged a complaint against her husband and others.
