A day after a 10-year-old girl was found dead under mysterious circumstances, police on Sunday discarded the human sacrifice angle and said they were exploring the possibility of rape.

On Saturday morning, the body of the victim, a resident of Sendrayampalayam near Valapady, was found hanging from a tree. Her parents said that she had gone to the bed with them on Friday night, but around midnight, when her mother woke up, she found the child missing.

Immediately, a search was launched, but it yielded no result. The following day, the search party found the child hanging from a tree near Perumal kovil karadu, around a kilometre away from the village.

Though the body did not have clothes on it,  police rejected possibility of rape at first. However, sources said, they were reconsidering their theory after doctors mentioned  the possibility of sexual assault.

“Though there were rumours doing the rounds that the girl was sacrificed, there was no evidence. However, doctors said rape could be a possibility. The postmortem report would come in a couple of days, following which we would be able give a specific direction to our investigations,” police said.

Meanwhile, the girl body was cremated on Saturday night after the postmortem.
