Boy Jumps Off Train, Dies

A 17-year-old was run over by a train at Katpadi railway station on Monday afternoon.

A 17-year-old was run over by a train at Katpadi railway station on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Ajith Kumar, son of Durai Raj of Lakshmi Nagar in Tiruppur. Kumar and his neighbour Nagaraj (32) had boarded the Coimbatore-Chennai Central Inter-City Express at Tiruppur during the early hours of Monday. The duo had bought tickets till Chittoor, from where they planned to board a bus to Tirupathi. After the train reached Katpadi, Nagaraj was told that he had to take another train to reach Chittoor.He alerted Kumar.

After the train started moving, Nagaraj alighted from the train. By the time Kumar alighted, the train had left the platform. Kumar fell from the train and got caught under the train and died on the spot. The accident occurred around noon.The Railway Government Police of Katpadi Station sent the body to Government Vellore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. “We informed Kumar’s parents about the accident. An inquiry is on,” said police.

30 Hurt in Mishap

Around 30 passengers of a Vellore bound government bus sustained injuries when a Tiruchy bound cement-laden lorry from Vellore collided with the bus along the Vellore-Tiruvannamalai Road at Idayansathu around 4.30 am on Monday.

Thirty-two people in the bus were injured, including the driver Stalin (38) and conductor Velu (28).  The Bagayam Police rescued the victims. They were shifted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital. Police registered a case.
