During the four days since chappathis were added to the Amma Canteen menu, the 203 canteens have so far sold 13.35 lakh chappathis. The chappathis which have been priced at `3 for a plate with dal kurma proved to be a hit with the canteens selling over 2.39 lakh chappathis on the first day. However, they are currently being made manually by teams of women, despite the corporation acquiring 9 modern chappathi making machines last year. This is preventing the large scale manufacture of chappathis.

According to a report released by the corporation on Tuesday, the plan was to install one machine in each zone. However, they did not provide the output quoted in the deal and so, they had been returned. The Mayor, during the corporation council meeting informed  that the machines which were finalised at a cost of `1.93 crore did not match the quality and the output mentioned by the provider and hence were being returned.

However, the provider has requested for more time to improve the machines to the required standards.. The mayor added that once the modern chappathi making machines are installed, the canteens would be able to provide a much larger output.
