Gang Kills AIADMK Man; 7 Surrender

An AIADMK functionary was chased and hacked to death by a four-member gang in broad daylight at Teynampet on Tuesday, much to the horror of passersby .

An AIADMK functionary was chased and hacked to death by a four-member gang in broad daylight at Teynampet on Tuesday, much to the horror of passersby .

S Arumugam, the functionary of the party’s ward 115 unit, had come out of his apartment at Barwa Nagar and was having tea in a shop just a few metres away. At around 7 am, the  gang came in an SUV and started attacking Arumugam. “The victim was chased for a few metres before the assailants overpowered him and repeatedly hacked him to death,” said a police officer.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and sent Arumugam’s body  to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for postmortem.

Later in the day, seven persons whom the police were looking out for in connection with the incident surrendered before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court,  Egmore. The surrendered persons were Bala alias Balakumar, 32, Ramalingam, 30, Sundar, 30, Muthu, 25, Venkatesan, 28, Thangam, 32, and Raju, 28.

The police suspect that Arumugam was involved in several money transaction dealing and was murdered over a dispute over that. “We will soon take the seven persons under custody and interrogate them. Only after that will we be able to tell the motive for the murder,” said a senior police officer.
