The suspension of former Union Minister MK Alagiri would have a serious impact on the DMK in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, said D Napoleon party MP.
Speaking to Express on the sidelines of the Alagiri’s birthday celebrations, Napoleon said that the DMK was sitting strong in southern districts only due to the hard work of the former south zone organising secretary.
“Alagiri created a strong base in the southern districts for the party. At a time when the party was weak in Madurai, he contested and registered a landslide victory in the previous Lok Sabha polls. Not satisfied with the win, he continued to work hard and again strengthened the Madurai unit,” pointed out Napoleon. But for all his efforts, the high command in return suspended him, disbanded the Madurai urban unit and initiated disciplinary action against a few functionaries.
“Such actions against Alagiri will seriously affect the party in the forthcoming parliamentary election,” he said.
Napoleon said, “If the high command takes action against me for supporting Alagiri, I will then take a call with him and decide the next course of action.”
Rajini greets madurai strongman
Madurai: Superstar Rajinikanth extended his wishes to former DMK south zone organising secretary MK Alagiri on his 63rd birthday on Thursday, said sources. Later in the afternoon, the Superstar called on Alagiri over the phone and greeted him. Others who greeted him included actor Prabhu, BJP State president Pon Radhakrishnan. Meanwhile, while grand celebrations marked the birthday of Alagiri in Madurai, there was not much fanfare in other southern districts as most of the functionaries were in Chennai to submit applications for LS poll ticket. “Normally a lot of events will be organised to mark Alagiri’s birthday. But this time we did not celebrate as the high command had suspended him,” said some functionaries.
