Elderly Woman Killed in Kurumbapet, Jewels Weighing10 Sovereigns Stolen

A 65-year-old woman, residing at a housing board quarters at Kurumbapet, was found murdered on Friday afternoon and her thali, bangles and earrings weighing about 10 sovereigns were missing.

PUDUCHERRY: A 65-year-old woman, residing at a housing board quarters at Kurumbapet, was found murdered on Friday afternoon and her thali, bangles and earrings weighing about 10 sovereigns were missing.

Inspector R Ragunayagam told Express that Prema was alone in the housing board quarters on Friday afternoon as her husband Suganandam had gone to a shop.

After Prema failed to attend the telephone calls, her son Gubesh rushed to the quarters around 3.30 pm and found his mother lying unconscious with her mouth gagged and hands tied up, police said. Prema was taken to hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead. Mettupalayam police have registered a case.

Child Abandoned

A four-year-old girl, who was left with a fisherwoman by her parents, was handed over to the Orleanpet police and sent to a child care home on Friday. Police said Kaliamma, a resident of Njarambai, was selling fish near the Venkata Subba Reddiar statue on Thursday when a couple approached her and requested her to look after their daughter till they returned from a wedding ceremony. As the couple never returned, Kaliamma took the child home. After being chided by her relatives for bringing the child home, she took the girl back to the place where she was selling fish and waited for a while. As none turned up to claim the child, she took her to the Orleanpet police station. The child could only reveal her name as Pachaivizhi. She was sent to a child care home.

Woman Cheated

A fortune teller cheated a woman of `1.20 lakh after promising to unearth treasure in her house at Mudaliarpet. Sankar (60) took money from the woman Mary on different occasions over the past one year. As he failed to unearth the treasure, Mary had asked Sankar, a resident of Tirunelveli, to return the money. However, Sankar, who used to occupy the footpath close to the police control room, was found missing ever since she made the demand. Mary lodged a complaint with the police.

Jewels Recovered

Police recovered 32 sovereigns more from a notorious chain-snatcher, Kumaravel alias Kumaran (35), who was arrested on May 23 last.Police had earlier recovered 62.5 sovereign jewels worth over `20 lakh from him. So far police have recovered 95 sovereigns from Kumaran.
