CHENNAI: After Modi, Rajini caught up with ‘Daddy’. In the latest of the actor’s high-profile apolitical meetings, the Superstar made a hush-hush visit to DMK president M Karunanidhi’s house in Gopalapuram on Sunday. He arrived at 10.50 am and stayed for 20 minutes before making an equally quiet exit back to his own house in Poes Garden. A little before the parliamentary polls, Rajini had met both Narendra Modi and Vaiko separately, but maintained that he had no political leaning of any sort.
Explaining his visit to the DMK patriarch’s residence, Rajinikanth said, “I was unable to call upon Kalaignar and wish him for his birthday as I was away in Hyderabad. That is why I came to see him today.” He also went on to urge the aged politician to watch his latest film - period flick Kochadaiiyaan. And in a pleasantly surprising twist, a source close to the actor revealed that Karunanidhi promised him that he would watch the film as he had always been partial towards period films.
One of the last films that Karunanidhi had scripted was a period film Ponnar Shankar, that had Prashant in the lead.
Much like with Modi, Karunanidhi’s verified twitter account (@Kalaignar89) promptly tweeted two pictures of the duo meeting, which was shared rapidly across the twitterverse.
Rajinikanth has been shooting for K S Ravikumar’s Lingaa in Mysore and Hyderabad and returned home on Friday. Though the producers have been saying that the overall earning for Kochadaiiyaan has been “excellent”, the fact remains that most theatres have stopped screening the animation film after two weeks - and the theatre count in South India has dipped to 320 screens.
