4 Refugees Released from Tiruchy Prison

TIRUCHY: Four Sri Lankan refugees who had been lodged at Tiruchy Central Special Prison camp were released on Monday following an order issued from the Home Department to the authorities in Central prison, after more than six months in prison.

As per the instructions from officials of the  home department, a release order was issued to the respective Collectors on June 6.

On the basis of the order, the four persons N Gangatharan (45), A Arulgnanaraj (33), K Logeshwaran (50) and  V Rajeshwaran (47) were released by the Tiruchy Central Prison authorities, the sources from police said.

Earlier, the four who were accommodated by the State government at Sri Lankan refugee camps established in Gummidipoondi, Tiruchy, Vellore and Chennai were arrested by the Q branch police.

The Q branch police in Chennai arrested more than hundred refugees, including the four, in a mid sea operation while they were trying to flee from their respective camps to Australia without any valid document including passport.

Subsequently, all the arrested refugees were lodged in Chennai and Chengalpattu  special camps.

Six months ago, Gangatharan, Arulgnanaraj, Logeshwaran and Rajeshwaran were shifted to special camps in Tiruchy Central Prison.
