TNPSC Chairman Named AIADMK Nominee for RS
CHENNAI: Within a few hours after the Election Commission announced by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa announced A Navaneethakrishnan, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission as the party’s candidate.
A decision to field Navaneethakrishnan was taken by the Parliamentary Board of the party, Jayalalithaa said in a statement here. Sources said Navaneethakrishnan was likely to resign as the TNPSC Chairman on Friday, to contest the election.
Born on May 18, 1956, Navaneethakrishnan has been a practitioner of law for more than three decades. He was the Special Public Prosecutor under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Essential Commodities Act in Thanjavur during 1991-1996. He also served as the Additional Public Prosecutor and in 2004, he became a TNPSC member. He also functioned as officiating Chairman of the Commission till 2008. After the AIADMK came to power in May 2011, he was appointed as Advocate General on May 23, 2011. From March 2013, he has been serving as the TNPSC chairman. Earlier, the Election Commission announced that the by-election to the Rajya Seat that fell vacant following the disqualification of DMK MP T M Selvaganapathi will be held on July 3.
Nominations for the by-election begins on June 16 and the last date for filing of nominations will be June 23. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 24 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be June 26. If there is more than one valid nomination, polling will be held on July 3 and the results will be announced the same day.
Following his conviction in the cremation shed scam by a special CBI court on April 17, Selvaganapathi was disqualified as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
The election is likely to be a cakewalk for AIADMK, which will gain one more MP in the Rajya Sabha, where its strength will go up from the present 10 to 11. The party position in the 234-member Tamil Nadu State Assembly as on date is as follows : AIADMK (152 including the Speaker), DMDK (28 including the 8 disgruntled MLAs), DMK (23), CPM (10), CPI (8), Congress (5), PMK (3), MMK and PT (two each) and AIFB (1).
