TIRUCHY: The Deputy Mayor of Tiruchy, Mariam Asick Meera, reportedly resigned from the post here on Monday  after a woman, claiming to be his first wife, alleged that he had reneged on a marriage promise.

The woman had also lodged a complaint against Meera with Ponmalai All women police. However, Mayor A Jaya and Corporation Commissioner VP Thandapani claimed that the deputy mayor resigned owing to personal reasons and would continue to serve as the councillor of ward 27.

Sources said that on March 8, Durgeswari (28) daughter of Ranjith Rana Singh, an ex-service man from New Delhi presently residing at Duraisamypuram near Sangiliyandapuram here, lodged a complaint against the Deputy Mayor with the Commissioner of Police stating that she developed a relationship with Asick Meera in 2006 when she was working in a private bank in the city.

According to the woman, Meera tied the knot with Durgeswari at a Pillayar temple here in 2007. When his father Marium Pichai came to know about the marriage, he sent Meera out of the house. From that time Meera was living with her.

During the course of their stay in a separate house, Durgeswari conceived thrice and all the three times, Asick Meera convinced her to abort the child promising that he would get the consent of his father and shift to his parental house. However, Asick Meera married his cousin Sajitha Begam and fathered two children.

“When I asked him about his marriage, he (Asick Meera) told me that it was a normal thing in his community,” Durgeswari said in her complaint.

Durgeswari again became pregnant and this time she decided to deliver the baby. But, Asick Meera, who did not agree for this, allegedly hired three men to kill her.

Shocked by Meera’s plans, Durgeswari attempted suicide, but was saved by her mother Mathumathi. Since then Asick Meera was avoiding Durgeswari.

However, when the situation turned worse, Asick Meera denied that he knew Durgeswari and claimed that his ‘enemies’ within the party were behind the ‘woman’s drama.’ Durgeswari, who delivered a baby girl a couple of months back, approached the Ponmalai All Women Police station and lodged a complaint against Asick Meera for cheating her with the promise of marriage and sexually assaulting her on Thursday (June 12).

Though the police summoned Asick Meera for an inquiry, they did not register a case on him. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the women went to the police station along with her advocate and staged a sit-in protest.

Subsequently, Asick Meera submitted his resignation with the Mayor on Monday who forwarded the letter to the Corporation Commissioner . “He has resigned from the post of Deputy Mayor owing to personal reasons. But he will continue to serve as the councillor of ward 27,” the Commissioner told Express.
