PUDUCHERRY: The executive engineer-IV of the Electricity Department was directed by the Sub Divisional Magistrate (North) P Parthiban, to make necessary arrangements to set up streetlights in Madagadipet area by July 17, where check posts of Customs and RTO are functioning.
P Parthiban issued the directions following a submission by A V Veeraraghavan of Indian National Congress.
According to the directions of SDM, if the Electricity Department failed to execute the order, then it has to appear before him on July 14 and provide an explanation as to why the order was not enforced and made absolute. Meanwhile, Veeraraghavan had brought to notice of the SDM about the frequent occurrence of accidents near the check posts at Madagadipet due to unavailability of lights in the vicinity. The petitioner also pointed out that Madagadipet is an important region on the border of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Moreover, it is an important trading hub with large scale public movement in the area.
The stretch of Puducherry-Villupuram highway on Madagadipet also faced similar problems due to absence of streetlights, witnessing a number of road accidents.
