VILLUPURAM: Eleven persons from Chennai have been accused of holding an autorickshaw race at Villupuram on early Sunday morning and were arrested by the police. Four autos, two bikes and a car were seized from them.

According to sources, followinga tip-off that a group was organising an autorickshaw race on the Chennai-Tiruchy National Highway, a police team from Villupuram taluk police station conducted a search in that area.

They spotted some autos racing on the Villupuram bypass road. Though the police officials asked them to stop, they didn’t. After a short chase, the officials caught them near Villupuram. All the arrested were residents of Chennai. They had fixed Pidagam and Villupuram as the starting and finishing points for the race and the betting amount was from `10,000 to `1 lakh. The officials, however, released three autos and other vehicles by evening, saying they were not used for the race.
