VELLORE: The Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday granted 48 hours police custody for the kingpin of red sanders smuggling, P Saravanan. The court directed the police to produce him on Wednesday.
Saravanan, a resident of Vasanthapuram, had surrendered before the Chief JM Court in Kancheepuram Thursday last, after eluding the police arrest in connection with seizure of `4.04 crore and 73 sovereigns of jewels from his relative Mohannambal’s house a month ago. Inquiry divulged that Saravanan and his relatives were involved in red sanders smuggling for several years.
The police, after obtaining the custody of Saravanan, took him to an undisclosed place for inquiry. The police said, he had links with notorious red sanders smugglers in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
