Rape Case Booked on former Deputy Mayor

TIRUCHY: A case has been registered on Wednesday against the former Deputy Mayor of Tiruchy under various sections, including rape, by the Ponmalai All Women Police following a complaint lodged by a woman who alleged that Asick Meera alias Mariam Asick cheated her with the promise of marriage. She also gave birth to a baby girl two months back.

Police said one Durgeswari (28), daughter of Ranjith Rana Singh, an ex-service man from New Delhi, at present residing at Duraisamypuram near Sangiliyandapuram here, gave birth to a baby girl two months back, and subsequently approached the Ponmalai All Women Police station with a complaint against Asick stating that he cheated her with the promise of marriage.

The police inquired Asick, but did not register a case. Due to the delay in filing a case, the woman went to the police station along with her advocate Banumathi, and staged a sit-in on June 16. On the same day, Mariam Asick resigned as deputy mayor.

On Wednesday, police registered a case against Mariam Asick under IPC Sections 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), 376 (committing rape), 417 (cheating), 496 (fraudulent marriage ceremony) and 506 (I) (criminal intimidation).

The resignation of Mariam Asick as deputy mayor is scheduled to be tabled before the Corporation Council which meets on Friday, said an official communication from the civic body.

Earlier on March 8 this year, Durgeswari submitted a complaint to the Commissioner of Police stating that she fell in love with Asick in 2006 when she was working in a private bank in the city.

She said Asick tied a mangalyam in 2007 at a temple here. But his father Marium Pitchai refused to accept the marriage and sent Asick away from his house. Later, Asick moved to a separate house with her.

Meanwhile, Durgeswari conceived thrice and Asick asked her to terminate her pregnancy convincing her that he would convince his father and take her to his house.

In course of time, Durgeswari again became pregnant and this time she prepared herself to deliver the baby. However, Asick allegedly tried to kill her. Shocked, Durgeswari tried to end her life, but was saved by her mother Mathumathi.
