Day After, Udayakumar Calls it 'Eliya Makkal Katchi'

In Tamil Nadu, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) will go by the name ‘Eliya Makkal Katchi’. The renaming could be figured out from the latest statement of AAP’s presently most popular face in the State, S P Udayakumar.

Though the AAP’s third national list of Lok Sabha poll candidates, released in Delhi, did not have his name on Saturday, Udayakumar, a day after formally joining the party without the support of most of the members and leaders of the People’s Movement for Nuclear Energy (PMANE), issued the statement from Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district, from where he has been spearheading the anti-Koodankulam agitation for three years. In that, he chose to use the Tamil nomenclature, though the party’s State office-bearers have not done that so far. However, Udayakumar stuck to the ‘broom’ symbol in the logo that was put out with the Tamil name.

He and the other potential electoral candidate from PMANE, M P Jesuraj, also declared their movable and immovable assets to ‘maintain high probity in public life’, adding that in the event of them buying anymore property they would declare it, explaining the source of income.

‘Since the Congress Party falsely accused us of various charges without giving any concrete evidence whatsoever, we ask the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi, and their family members Priyanka and Robert Vadra to declare all their assets publicly. Similarly, we demand the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and other senior leaders to make their assets information public,” the statement said.

The immovable assets of Udayakumar, his wife and parents in Kanyakumari district are: 10 cents of land with a concrete house in Esankanvilai, 15 cents with two concrete buildings in Keezha Ramanputhur, 3.77 acre with two school buildings at Neendakarai, nearly 8.5 acre of rubber and coconut garden at Azhakiapandiapuram and 12 cents at Thiruppathisaram.

The moveable assets include two school vans (Mahindra, Eicher) and an old Ambassador car. His mother has 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery and wife 90 sovereigns. They have taken jewellery loan for `3 lakh.

Jesuraj and his parents own 27.62 acre of land in Mela Kadayam in Tirunelveli district.
