Prof Chadha's Demise Condoled

Academics and teachers’ organisations in Tamil Nadu have condoled the passing away of noted economist and former Jawaharlal Nehru University vice-chancellor Prof Chadha, who was responsible for recommending vital reforms in the higher education system.

Prof Chadha, who was a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and a past president of the Indian Economics Association, had won the hearts of college teachers in the country by recommending the abolition of the nomenclature of ‘Lecturer’ and replacing it with ‘Assistant Professor’.

“As chairman of the UGC Pay Review Committee, he had highlighted the need to accord the highest possible salary to teachers in higher education to attract the best talents in the country,” said M Ravichandran, a senior teacher working in Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College, Chennai.
