Giving a fitting reply to the callous attitude of the municipality, members connected through Facebook volunteered for a cleaning drive at the Manjakuppam ground, situated opposite the Cuddalore collector’s office on Sunday.

Political parties frequently conduct public meetings and the residents routinely pass their evenings at the ground. But what perturbed the residents is tipplers who convert the place into an open bar during the night and leave the ground ridden with empty bottles, shards of glass and plastic. The Cuddalore municipal administration, has not been periodically cleaning it.

Reacting to the plight, around 50 members acquainted through Facebook in Cuddalore, came forward to clear the ground on Sunday. The members collected the trash in plastic bags (50 bags were required), and contacted the municipality to send a vehicle to dispose of the garbage. With the municipality not arriving at the ground for over an hour, the members went to the municipal office, where they were cold-shouldered. Subsequently, the municipal commissioner who was contacted over the phone, reportedly told that no sanitary workers were available as it was Sunday. He asked them to leave the bags at the ground and workers would retrieve them on Monday morning.
