Vasan Unveils 9-ft Statue of Kamaraj at Renamed Port

Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan on Sunday unveiled a statue of Congress veteran and former Chief Minister K Kamaraj at the newly-renamed Kamaraj Port at Ennore. He said the statue was a mark of respect to the leader, and that it would serve to educate future generations of his life and achievements.

“The foundation of the growth that Tamil Nadu has seen was laid by Kamaraj 50 years ago. It was his vision to have schools in all villages, mid-day meals, dams on rivers and industries in each town. He left his impact on education, industry, agriculture and every other field,” said Vasan, after unveiling the statue.

“This statue will also stand as a reminder to those who conduct business here to act with honesty, humility and simplicity,” he added.

Speakers at the function also claimed that the Kamaraj statue Vasan unveiled is unique, as it is the first one to show Kamaraj astride, instead of the familiar standing pose of the leader.

The nine-foot high statue has been mounted on a 10-foot pedestal. Made of brass, the statue weighs 330 kg and has been created by sculptor Nagappa Jagannathan.

Vasan expressed confidence that the Kamaraj Port at Ennore would grow at a great pace in years to come. Vasan announced on behalf of the port’s management that the amount being paid to members of women’s self help groups has been increased by 20 per cent.
