Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University Prof Chandra Krishnamurthy on Monday said two new welfare measures were proposed to be introduced for women on the university campus soon.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day function, the V-C said a care room for new and expectant mothers to have rest and relaxation and a facility to provide nutritive food at subsidised rates for girl students and women faculty members and staff on the campus will be introduced.

She said the girl students lack nutritious food and women faculty members may not get enough time to have healthy food because of their busy schedule. She said the Food Science Department of the university may take steps to provide a healthy diet for girl students, women faculty members and staff.  

The V-C, who stressed the importance of equality for women, launched a separate web portal for the Women’s Cell of the Pondicherry University. Chandra Krishnamurthy also released a pamphlet about the Women’ Cell, the first copy of which was received by the Registrar.

Raajiv Yaduvanshi, IAS, Registrar of the Pondicherry University (PU), emphasised the need for personal involvement and sensitivity towards women’s issues at the institutional level.

K Vijayakumaran, Finance Officer,highlighted the importance of education and economic empowerment of women.

Prof G Chandhrika, Head of Women’s Cell, Prof V Indumathi, Director in-charge of Educational Innovation and Rural Studies, Dr K Sampath, Controller of Examinations, and Dr V T Usha, Head of Centre for Women’s Studies, spoke.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of essay, elocution, poster and rangoli competitions held to sensitise students, research scholars, supporting staff and faculty of the Pondicherry University. A group song was presented by the supporting staff at the function.
