Flying squad in Vedaranyam have confiscated gold biscuits, weighing 7.218 kg from a passenger on board a Chennai bound omnibus at Alangudi on Monday night. Officials have detained a youth from Kottaipattinam on charges of smuggling.

At around 11 pm, the squad headed by the Thirukkuvalai Taluk Supply Officer Marimuthu intercepted the private omnibus arriving from Thondi in Ramanathapuram.  Officials found an abandoned bag in the bus containing 22 gold biscuits,  weighing 7.218 kg, wrapped in three packets.

As nobody claimed ownership for the bag, the squad officials along with Vedaranyam police, brought the 20 passengers of the omnibus to the Vedaranyam Taluk office for interrogations.

In the interrogations, it was found that one youth, identified as Amjad Khan (25), son of Khadar Mohideen of Chathiram Street in Kottaipattinam was the owner of the bag. The biscuits were being smuggled to Chennai. A case is registered at the Thalainayar PS.

In Coimbatore, police seized unaccounted money to the tune of `8 lakh, while flying squad seized `5 lakh from a political party cadre near Kanyakumari.

Around 9 am, the squad stopped a biker at the Chinna Muttom checkpost. The man, who was found in possession of the money, claimed that it was for paying insurance premium. The man identified as Kanagaraj of Thikurichy, could not produce proper documents. Officials seized the amount.

Police seized another `2.97 lakh from Mohammed of Coimbatore. He had documents for `2.05 lakh, the remaining`92,000 was seized. In Tirupur, flying squad seized `92,000 from a trader. In Ramanathapuram, flying squd seized `1.5 lakh from a person.
