Alagiri Reply to BJP Overture on Sunday

Suspended DMK leader MK Alagiri, who met BJP president Rajnath Singh during his New Delhi visit on Thursday, told Express that he would ‘consult his supporters over extending support to the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

“While waiting at the airport to take a return flight to Chennai, I chanced upon BJP leader Rajnath Singh who invited me to his house, where we had an informal talk,” Alagiri said.

When asked whether Rajnath Singh sought his support in the State, he replied in the affirmative. “But I told him that I would consult with my supporters before announcing decision,” the former Union Minister said. On Friday evening, Alagiri also met the former DMK south Chennai district secretary Babu.

Meets Superstar

Meanwhile, in Chennai,  Alagiri met film icon Rajinikant at his residence on Friday. Alagiri said he had come to congratulate the superstar on the release of the music of his upcoming film, Kochadaiiyaan, and insisted politics did not figure in the meeting. Alagiri reached Rajinikant’s residence in Poes Garden area around 10:20 am and left about 20 minutes later. He was accompanied by his son Dayanidhi Alagiri, who runs a film production house.

“I heard the music of Kochadaiiyaan and I liked it. So, I came to congratulate him (Rajinikant) on it. Ours is a longstanding friendship. I also spoke to him about a film my son is making. We did not discuss any politics,” said Alagiri, while leaving.

He refused to comment on questions over speculation that he was preparing to launch his own political party, or whether he would contest the coming Lok Sabha elections in Madurai.
