A nomad family of Kadachenenthal was ostracized from their community after they approached police to solve their family dispute. The decision was made through village Kangaroo court in Madurai district.

The victim C Raja Rao belonging to Kanikkar community, whose family occupation is palmistry, claimed that the community head along with other leaders charged fine against their family and allegedly collected more than `1.8 lakh from them. Despite knocking the doors of various government authorities, his issues were not sorted out yet.

“In June last year, there was a family dispute between my two daughters. Even though it was taken to K Pudur police station, both of them compromised themselves after reaching an agreement between them. But, the community leaders especially Mani Rao claimed that we should not have gone to the police station but approached the kangaroo court for it”, he said.

It was followed by imposition of heavy fines on his family, who had paid `1.8 lakh.

The community head Mani Rao denied that a large sum was being collected as fine. Collector L Subramanian warned that he would immediately initiate action against the culprits who run kangaroo court, which was totally against the law, if the allegations were true.
