The DMK and AIADMK will be locked in a significant contest in the Perambalur constituency which has six assembly segments in three districts.

The Assembly segments are Perambalur (Reserve), Thuraiyur (Reserve), Lalgudi, Musiri, Manachanallur and Kulithalai. Of these six constituencies, except Perambalur and Kulithalai the other four constituencies  fall under Tiruchy district. Kulithalai constituency is in Karur district.

The first election after delimitation was held in 2009. From 1951, Perambalur witnessed 15 elections including by-elections. Of them, the DMK won seven times and the AIADMK secured the constituency five times, Congress three times and TNT just once in the first election held in 1951 after independence.

The Mutharaiyar community became dominant  after the delimitation in 2009 as the newly inducted assembly constituencies from Tiruchy district such as Musiri, Manachanallur and Kulithalai are dominated by them.  The constituency was dominated by Dalit community before delimitation.  Next to Mutharaiyar, Dalits, Udaiyars, Reddiyars and Konars are also present in sizable numbers.

At present RB Marutharaja of AIADMK and Seemanur S Prabhu of DMK are in the fray. Marutharaja was announced as the party candidate during 2009 Parliament election. DMK contestant Prabhu is in the fray for the first time. Both contestants hail from the same Mutharaiyar community.
