Sulking Kushbu Awaits DMK's Call to Hit Campaign Trail
A crowd-puller for the DMK in the 2011 Assembly poll, she is yet to hit the campaign trail. Cynosure of all eyes not only at the party’s campaign in the past but also all major programmes, be it a protest or a jamboree, actor Kushbu Sundar is missing in action this time round.
For, the campaign thus far has been a solo show by heir apparent and party treasurer M K Stalin. Along with the suave yet assertive Kanimozhi, she was a popular woman face in a male-dominant party like the DMK. Their absence has not gone unnoticed. It has given rise to speculation on whether Kushbu is being sidelined. So, will she hit the campaign trail at all? “Soon”, was her terse response. But, she did not specify any date. Party sources too were not clear as to when she would step in.
Though her Tamil lacked the rhetorical flourish of the usual Dravidian political oratory, she remained an effective tool for mass mobilisation, drawing huge crowds. Kushbu toured the entire length and breadth of the State and cases have been filed against her for violation of the Model Code of Conduct during campaigns. She is battling them even now.
While another crowd puller, comedian Vadivelu, distanced himself from the party after the debacle in the 2011 election, Kushbu continued to remain with the DMK. Though a comparatively recent entrant to the party, her rise in the ranks was phenomenal and her access to the leadership raised hackles within the party. Yet, there was no threat to her access to the party leadership. The equation changed after she aired views on the party succession issue and paid the price for her outspokenness. A day after her interview with a Tamil magazine saying that the party General Council will decide on the leadership, footwear was thrown at her in Tiruchy and her house here was targeted by DMK workers. While she now awaits a call from the leadership, functionaries too await her arrival to provide the glamour quotient.
