Disappointment was writ large on the faces of DMK partymen when they listened to the speech by their Virudhunagar MP candidate S Rethinavelu at a party cadre meeting organised here on Saturday evening.

As he did not know the ground realities in the district, Rethinavelu started speaking about making the Madurai airport an international airport, instead of speaking about the problems faced by the people in Virudhunagar.

Moreover, Rethinavelu had mentioned the same issue when he was announced as the DMK MP candidate and when he participated in the introductory meeting in Virudhunagar on March 12.

As the party members were unhappy with the speech, many of them left the meeting venue and made a beeline to the dining hall to have dinner.

Rethinavelu continued the speech even as many chairs at the marriage hall, where the meeting was held, became empty. A few partymen who came out of the meeting said that Rethinavelu had given a great speech but when asked as to what he actually spoke, the cadre blinked.

When pressed for details, the cadre wondered whether the candidate would ever honour the promises he made if he were elected from the constituency.

The rest of the cadre said Rethinavelu  should have highlighted the problems of the people  rather than speaking about business issues or making the Madurai airport an international airport.
