When the Congress on Tuesday announced the candidature of S Jothimani for the Karur Lok Sabha constituency, it was rewarding her for being an extremely bright, active and sincere young politician. She is also the only woman candidate fielded in Karur so far.

Jothimani caught Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s eye during her earlier tenure in the Youth Congress since she is aggressive and assertive and a very intelligent debater. In order to groom her, she was also sent to Uttar Pradesh for a while.

Currently the national secretary of the Mahila Congress, Jothimani fulfils two criteria set by the party to give poll tickets — at least 15% seats to women and giving young talent an opportunity. This will be Jyotimani’s second poll battle, as she had unsuccessful contested in the 2011 Assembly elections from the Karur segment.

Jothimani started her political career as councillor of Paramathi panchayat union for two terms from 1996 to 2006 and later held various posts in the Youth Congress. She had also done some literary work and written three books .

While Rahul sees her as bright spark, the local unit of the Youth Congress is grumbling. According to Karur Youth Congress president Ramesh Kumar, she has not maintained good contact with the cadre. In the 2011 Assembly elections, she lost with the highest margin in Tamil Nadu, he points out.
