Tirupur segment is going to witness a keen battle between two veterans amidst several new faces. Former Union Minister EVKS Elangovan (Congress) who won the segment in 2004 when it was called Gobichettipalayam is trying his luck again. Another former MP of the segment K Subbarayan (CPI), who was also two times MLA of Tirupur, is in the fray.

Their rivals are Sathyabama (AIADMK), Erode suburban district AIADMK women’s wing secretary, Dr M Senthilnathan (DMK) , Dineshkumar (DMDK) who contested in the 2009 poll, and Chakravarthy Rajagopalan (AAP).

Of the six assembly segments, Gobi is represented by KA Sengottaiyan, Perundurai by Environment Minister ND Venkatachalam, Andhiyur by SS Ramanidaran, Bhavani by PG Narayanan, Tirupur North by Forest minister MSM Anandan and South K Thangavel (CPM). The rest belong to AIADMK.

While, Tirupur is famous for textile sector, Perunduai has SIPCOT industrial estate in an area of 1,800 acre. Gobi has many spinning mills, Bhavani and Andhiyur have many handloom and powerloom units.

While Tirupur North and South are in Tirupur district, the rest are in Erode district which got benefit under the Lower Bhavani and Mettur Right bank irrigation canals. Hence, the segment can be dubbed as a mixture of both industrial and agriculture activities.

The segment named as Gobichettipalayam before delimitation elected KS Ramasamy (Congress) in 1957, PG Karuthiuman (Congress) in 1962, PA Saminathan (DMK) in 1967,  1971, KS Ramasamy (Congress) in 1977, C Chinnasamy (AIADMK) in 1980, P Kolandaivelu (AIADMK) in 1984, PG Narayanan (AIADMK) in 1989, 1991, VP Shanmugasundarm (DMK) in 1996, VK Chinnasamy (AIADMK) in 1998, KK Kaliappan (AIADMK) in 1999 and EVKS Elangovan (Congress) in 2004.

Problems of textile sector, drought situation, depleting ground water conditions, power cuts, non-implementation of Athikadavu-Avinasi water project, pollution caused by textile units, lack of basic facilities in many villages are major problems of the segment.
