Kallakurichi Promises Hot Triangular Contest

Kallakurichi is a constituency which resembles its neigbouring Villupuram in social-economic aspects as well as the strength of political parties.

Kallakurichi is a constituency which resembles its neigbouring Villupuram in social-economic aspects as well as the strength of political parties. Like Villupuram, this consituency too sees a triangular contest between the AIADMK, DMK and DMDK, while Congress too is in the race.

The DMDK has polled over 15 per cent votes in the last general elections, while the PMK has a strong presence. The MDMK has significant strength, making it a hot triangular contest between the AIADMK, DMK and DMDK. It consists of three Assembly segments from Villupuram district  and another three from Salem. They are  Rishivandiyam,   Sankarapuram  and  Kallakurichi  of Villupuram district and  Gangavalli ,  Attur and  Yercaud from Salem Districts .

Kallakurichi has  7,21,719 Voters including 3,66,508 men , 3,55,109 women and 102 transgenders. Two seats including Kallakurichi and Sankarapuram  where represented by AIADMK MLA’s  K. Alaguvelu  and by P Mohan respectively . DMDK Leader Vijayakant  represents Rishivandhiyam constituency.

More than 70,000 people beloning to tribal communities are residing at Kalvarayan hills in Kallakurichi, in which 35, 000 are eligible voters. Complications in receiving community certificates and poor connectivity to schools are the primary reason for the students here from remote villages to skip their school education after eighth standard.  They also state that they have to travel a mimum 5 kilometre to fetch drinking water. They also complain of bad roads. The villagers surrounding Rishivandiyam and Sankarapuram needs over bridges and roads to ensure safer transportation .

Dr K Kamaraj and Villupuram South District  Medical Wing Secretary has been announced as the candidate for Kallakurichi for AIADMK. His father Kalitheerthan was twice elected as AIADMK MLA from Sankarapuram constituency in 1980 and 1984 .

The DMK has fielded  R Manimaran as their candidate. The Congress has announced Devadoss as its candidate.
