Staff cleaning a SpiceJet plane that flew in from Colombo via Chennai stumbled upon a package containing 1.2kg of gold worth `36 lakh underneath a seat on Saturday.
Sources said that the staff boarded the plane shortly after the passengers alighted at 8.30 am. They found the sealed package under seat number 10 A and alerted the customs officials.
On opening the package, the customs officials found 12 gold biscuits, weighing 100 gm each. Subsequently, Ranjith Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, Customs Department (Special Intelligence and Investigation Agency) was informed, who conducted a probe and alerted the Chennai Airport.
Later, Kumar told reporters that an investigation would be conducted to trace the origin of the package.
Police claimed that the flight might not have been checked in Chennai or else the package would have been discovered earlier.
