Misfired Bid to Cut Damage to Stalin’s Image

DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday rejected his son and party heir-apparent M K Stalin’s offer to resign owning moral responsibility for the Lok Sabha debacle.

CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Sunday rejected his son and party heir-apparent M K Stalin’s offer to resign owning moral responsibility for the Lok Sabha debacle.

A senior functionary told Express that the move was aimed at countering acerbic comments from former DMK south zone organising secretary M K Alagiri.

Alagiri has been gloating in Madurai that the DMK would not have performed so badly if it had not expelled him.

There has also been guerrilla criticism from within the DMK’s ranks on Stalin’s brinksmanship in the polls. These voices have attacked his choice of candidates and blamed him for backing those who did not have

the ability to win. They have also attributed the poll disaster on the decision to field tainted former Union ministers. These voices, however, had gone into hiding as the drama unfolded on predictable lines.
