VILLUPURAM: A 16-year-old girl attempted to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze after a 22-year-old man threatened her to marry him, at St Xavier Colony at Villupuram on Friday night.

The police registered a case and remanded the youth in Villupuram sub-jail on Saturday night.

Police sources said, Eshwari (name changed) was residing along with her family at St Xavier Colony in Villupuram town. She had completed her Class X examinations and was working at a fancy store during the summer vacation.

Meanwhile, Melsin (22), son of Chinnappan, residing in the same area, had asked the girl to marry him one-and-a-half months back. However, Eshwari did not respond and Melsin  continued to trouble her while she went for work.

On Friday evening, while Eshwari’s family members were not present at home, Melsin entered the house and asked Eshwari to accept his proposal at knife point. He also threatened to kill her if she did not decide on it by Saturday morning.

Following this, a terrified Eshwari attempted to commit suicide by setting herself ablaze. On hearing her cries, local residents rushed to the house and rushed her to the Villupuram Government Hospital. As she suffered severe burns, she was later shifted to JIPMER, Pondicherry. Based on Eshwari’s statement, the Villupuram Town police registered a case and remanded Melsin in Villupuram sub-jail on Saturday night. Further investigations are on.
