Man Gets 7-yr Sentence for Raping Minor

COIMBATORE: A 25-year-old man was convicted by the mahila court here for raping an eight-year-old girl near Sirumugai in 2010 and was awarded seven-year term.

According to the prosecution, R Seerangan (25), of Mothur, near Sirumugai, is said to have taken the girl of his neighbour to an isolated spot adjoining a cardboard box manufacturing company  in the same locality and sexually assaulted her.

Residents of the area rescued her and informed the police. After a search, Sreerangan was arrested.

On Friday, when the case came up for hearing at the Mahila Court in Coimbatore, judge M P Subramanian,  found the charges against the accused proven and sentenced him to seven-year jail term and slapped a fine of `5,000.

Dad of Three Held

Meanwhile, in Salem, a 45-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to sexually harass a mentally ill woman here on Thursday.

According to police, a 30-year-old mentally ill woman was alone at her house in K Morur near Omalur on Thursday evening when a man sneaked into her house and allegedly attempted to outrage her modesty.

While resisting the man’s act, she shouted for help. On hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to her home, but the intruder took to his heels.

Locals chased and caught him and he was later handover to Deevattipatty police. The man has been identified as Mahalingam (45), of Kanavaipudur Kudiyathukombai and a father of three. Police registered a case under section 376 of the IPC.
