SI Suspended for Killing Youth in Police Station

RAMANATHAPURAM: Sub-inspector of police Kalidas, who shot dead Syed Mohamed in the SP Pattinam police station here, was on Wednesday placed under suspension on the orders of SP Mylvahanan. Though hospital authorities completed the post-mortem, relatives of Mohamed refused to accept his body and urged the government to book Kalidas under IPC section 302 and arrest him. Tension situation prevailed at the hospital as police attempted to pacify them.

Speaking to Express, SP Mylvahanan said the SI was suspended to facilitate judicial enquiry and assured that a fair enquiry would be conducted into the alleged encounter. The SP conducted a preliminary enquiry with the personnel who were on duty during the shooting incident that happened in the SP Pattinam police station. Paramasivam, SSI, Dhanabalan, head constable and two youth brigades Mahalingam and Ravi attended the enquiry at the district police headquarters.

Syed’s grandfather Sathakathullah said, “My grandson Syed was working in a prawn company. The police took him to the police station without our knowledge where they beat him to death before shooting him.”

Many of Syed’s relatives and cadres and functionaries of various Muslim organisations, including Baseer, district president of the Popular Front of India, and State secretaries of India Thouhid Jamath, Mohammed Abdul Gani, and Mozamil, assembled at the government headquarters hospital in a show of support to the deceased’s family.

Ramanathapuram MLA Jawahirullah, who visited the hospital, charged that after beating Syed to death, the SI had staged a drama that he had shot Syed in ‘self-defence’ to escape. Jawahirullah demanded that a family member of Syed be given government job and solatium of Rs 10 lakh.

The ripples of the killing were felt in Chennai as well where several Islamic outfits on Wednesday demanded action against the ‘trigger happy’ cop. Representatives of TN Thowheed Jamaat met ADGP TK Rajendran and sought action against the sub-inspector S Kalidass.
