PUDUCHERRY: DMK district secretary of Karaikal and MLA A M H Nazeem has urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to intervene and help maintain  status quo on the All India Radio Station in  Karaikal region.

In a statement, he said the local AIR station has been functioning since 1995 and broadcasting programmes in Tamil. However, he said the Central government has issued an order that 86 local AIR stations, including the Karaikal station, broadcast Vividh Bharti programmes.

Pointing out that the Vividh Bharti programmes are in Hindi, the DMK leader said this would lead to reduction in broadcast of Tamil programmes, which cater to the needs of the locals.

He added that the Tamil programmes of the AIR Karaikal, which provide news bulletins, weather warnings etc, always benefit the local population.
