Vilavancode Tahsildar Escapes Attempt on Life

NAGERCOIL : A woman tahsildar in the district had a narrow escape after a political party functionary tried to run over her following a dispute over sand permit.

Sources said that  Vilavancode tahsildar L Jane Christy Bai during a routine check on Tuesday spotted some workers loading river sand on to a tempo from a lorry at Thikurichy near Marthandam. On suspicion, when she checked with the workers in the lorry, they could not  produce transport permit for the sand. So, the tahsildar impounded both the vehicles along with the sand and handed them over to Padmanabhapuram RDO.  The vehicles were owned by a party functionary and local businessman identified as G Devadhas (43) of Gaaramvilai near Marthandam. Later, in the evening, Devadhas came to the tahsildar’s office picked up an argument with Jane Christy and demanded to release his vehicles. When the tahsildar refused and tried to leave the office, he blocked the vehicle. Subsequently, the tahsildar alighted from the vehicle and started walking. At this juncture, Devadhas tried to run over his SUV on the tahsildar, Kaliyakkavilai Inspector Anbu Prakash told Express over phone.

Following a complaint, police registered cases on Devadhas under sections 294 (b), 353, 341 and 307 of IPC and arrested him.
