VELLORE: A 52-year-old worker of a private cement factory in Melpadi died of suffocation after falling into a 20-tonne-capacity bin containing cement, on Wednesday night.
Police personnel required 10 hours of strenuous, continuous effort to remove the cement and recover the deceased’s body with the help of local help.
The deceased was identified as Murthy of Bhunniyabhoomi village. He was working as a watchman in Bharath Cement Factory. On Wednesday night, around five workers were engaged in filling cement into a 20-tonne-capacity bin, connected to a packing unit.
Murthy, who was assisting the workers, lost balance and fell into the funnel shaped bin.
He was caught at the bottom of the bin containing cement and suffocated to death, said the police attached to Melpadi.
After unloading the cement from the bin, the police recovered the body around 10 am on Thursday.
Some villagers staged a protest and demanded compensation from the company management.
The deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem to the Government Hospital at Walajapet. The Melpadi police registered a case regarding the incident and further inquiries are on.
