BSP Lone Rival In Arakkonam Civic Bypoll for AIADMK

VELLORE: As filing of nominations ended on Thursday for contesting for the post of chairman for the Arakkonam municipality, the contest appears to be between AIADMK and the Bhahujan Samaj Party.

The by-election is slated to be held on September 18. The post of chairperson for the Arakkonam municipality went vacant following the death of chairperson Manoharan (DMK) in 2012, while he was campaigning for the Sankarankoil Assembly by election. Following this, vice-chairperson K Raja had assumed the role of the acting chairperson.

As soon as the State election commission had announced by-elections for local bodies, the AIAMDK had announced the candidature of S Kannadasan, who is presently the president of the town youth wing of the party.

He has also served as the councillor of the municipality in 2001.

On Thursday BSP candidate B Sudhakar filed his nomination. In addition three more independent candidates K Naresh Kumar, J Anandan and T Sureska  also filed their nominations. No other party candidates have filed their papers.

Arakkonam municipality has 62,013 electorates, comprising 30,593 men and 31,420 women.

The polls will be held in 63 booths with the help of Electronic Voting Machines.
