Cop, Another Die on way to Mishap Site

VILLUPURAM : In a bitter twist of fate, a head constable and another person were killed in an accident on Sunday evening when the duo was on its way to rescue a hit-and-run victim near Valavanur.

Police said Kannapan (53), a head constable with the district Prohibition Enforcement Wing, was on duty at the checkpost in Gangarampalayam village near Valavanur when Vinayagam (24) of Mudaliarpet in Puducherry came on a bike and informed him of an accident near L R Palayam in which a man had been injured and was lying on the roadside.

Vinayagam offered to take Kannapan to the accident spot on his bike. They were on their way when a car, approaching from the opposite direction on the Villupuram-Puducherry Road, hit their bike. The duo was thrown off the bike in the impact.

While the biker Vinayagam died on the spot, Kannapan succumbed to his injuries at JIPMER hospital on Monday. The constable belonged to Anandhapuram in Villupuram.

The victim of the hit-and-run, meanwhile, was being treated at JIPMER. He was identified as Raja (27) of T Edaiyarpalayam village. He was reportedly hit by an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene. The Valavanur police registered a case and were searching for vehicles involved in both the accidents.

Vinayagam’s eyes were donated as per his parents’ wishes. The procedure was conducted at a private hospital at Madagadipet. The body was handed over to Vinayagam’s parents on Monday afternoon after an autopsy at the Mundiampakkam Medical College Hospital.
