VELLORE: Five persons were arrested for smuggling red sanders logs, weighing around 1 tonne, during a vehicle check in the small hours of Wednesday at Sholinghur town.
A police team led by sub-inspector of Police Hussain, who was engaged in vehicle check along the Chittoor-Sholinghur Road, waved two speeding cars heading towards Chennai to stop. However, the cars drove away, sources said. The police chased the car for nearly five kilo metres. To evade police arrest, the persons abandoned the vehicles and took to their heels. The police team found 17 logs of red sanders in the vehicles. The police launched a search for the smugglers and arrested four persons .
The four were identified as R Annadurai (36), V Ramakrishnan (19) of Nammiyampat in Polur Taluk, S Gopi (32) of Keelkalpattu in Vellore taluk and P Moorthy (37) of Virupachipuram in Vellore. Based on the information provided by them, the police arrested yet another person, whose identity is yet to be disclosed. ENS
