BJP Challenges SEC Notification

CHENNAI: The Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) has moved the Madras High Court with a writ petition challenging a notification dated August 28 of the State Election Commission (SEC), which announced a schedule for the election to the casual workers’ vacancies in the local bodies in the State.

According to K Sarvothaman, headquarters secretary of the State BJP unit,  the party was prepared to contest the 122 posts against 281 vacancies notified by the SEC.

He alleged that almost every candidate of the BJP was threatened and prevented from filing nominations. In several cases, he said that BJP candidates were allegedly kidnapped and prevented from filing nominations. They were let off only after the filing of nominations was over.

In some cases, the nominations were withdrawn by forging the signatures of the BJP candidates, he added.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing today (Tuesday).
