Cop Attacked by Sand Mafia

CHENGALPATTU : A police inspector, who seized trucks involved in sand smuggling, was attacked inside a police station in Salavakkam, Chengalpattu, by the town panchayat president, who owned the vehicles.

Acting upon instructions from the Kancheepuram SP, following complaints about illegal sand mining, Salavakkam inspector Thangavel on Thursday seized two lorries and an earth mover owned by Sirupuliyur Town Panchayat president Kalaiarasan. Kalaiarasan went to the police station and picked up a quarrel with the inspector and hit him on his neck. Kalaiarasan was immediately detained at the police station.

On hearing the news, more than 100 people of Sirupuliyur village protested in front of the police station demanding Kalaiarasan’s immediate release. Police dispersed the group.

House burgled

Robbers broke into a locked house in Mangala Nagar in Porur and robbed 400 grams of gold jewellery and `45,000 cash in broad daylight.

Owner of the house, Prathap (36), lived on the first floor while his parents lived on the ground floor. Prathap (36) works an assistant to a Madras High Court Judge.

On Thursday, Prathap left for work and his wife Hemalatha went to her mother’s place. Subsequently, Prathap’s parents also left the house for shopping.

Utilising the opportunity, robbers gained entry to the house and broke open the cupboard on the first floor and robbed the gold jewellery and cash. Prathap’s parents, who came back after shopping, did not realise that the house had been robbed. When Prathap returned in the evening he found the house broken into and the valuables stolen. Based on a complaint from Prathap, Porur police formed a special team to nab the robbers.

Chain snatched

A 55-year-old woman was robbed of her 24-gram gold chain while returning home near Ambattur. Rani (55) of Banu Nagar was walking back home when two men on a bike wearing helmets snatched her chain and fled.
