IAS Officer to Face Suit

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High court has directed to implead IAS officer Uma Shankar after a right-wing outfit functionary filed a petition seeking to file a case against him for making religious discourses and interviews that “hurt the feelings” of Hindus.

M Jothi, a functionary of a Hindu outfit, moved the court alleging that the IAS officer had visited West Paracheri village in Kanyakumari district and conducted a prayer meeting to promote Christianity.

The petitioner submitted that based on the Venugopal Commission recommendation, the district administration had issued prohibition order for conducting religious meetings and despite knowing this, Uma Shankar participated in a prayer convened by locals.
