NAGARCOIL: The body of a fisherman from Pozhikarai who was shot dead while fishing in Saudi Arabia was brought back to his native place near Eathamozhy in the district on Tuesday.
On May 29, S Mathivalan (45), of Pozhikarai coastal hamlet near Eathamozhy, along with seven crew members, also from Kanyakumari district, went for deep sea fishing from Jubail coast, Saudi Arabia. Around 8.30 pm the same day Mathivalan was shot dead by an unidentified person.
The district administration through the State government and Union External Affairs ministry took steps to bring back the fisherman's body his native place. After completing formalities the body was brought to Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday morning by air.
The State Fisheries minister K A Jayapal, Fisheries department secretary Dr S Vijayakumar, district Collector Sajjansingh R Chavan, Tamil Nadu State Apex Fisheries Cooperative Federation Ltd president M Xavier Manoharan and senior officials of the fisheries department received the body at the airport. Later the body was taken by road to the fisherman's place, Pozhikarai.
Meanwhile Jayapal, Vijayakumar and the Collector visited the fisherman's house at Pozhikarai and consoled the relatives of the fisherman.
