COIMBATORE:Even after four years since the corporation was expanded to 100 wards, the civic body administration is still facing staff shortage in all departments.
It sent several proposals to the State government to fill up the vacancies, from the posts of assistant engineers to assistant commissioner, but no action has been taken yet.
According to sources, the City Corporation in its council meeting held in December 2012 has requested the Directorate of Municipal Administration to create as many as 2,987 new posts for the newly-created fifth zone.
The the civic body was expanded to five zones from four zones and 100 wards from 62 wards.
Again in January 2014, the civic body urged the State government to create two deputy commissioner posts, one each of Health Department and Public Works Department to monitor various development projects.
Thought civic body has sent repeated reminders to the government, no steps followed.
The delay in filling up vacancies is putting extra burden on the officials and is delaying important works like issuance of building approvals, drinking water connection etc.
The corporation officials complain that they are over burdened and are forced to work even on their holidays.
However, a senior corporation official expressed hope that the government would fill up at least two hundred vacancies soon.
“We are waiting for the government to issue a Government Order for filling up 236 vacancies as per an agreement reached during a meeting held in the presence of Municipal administration in February,” the official said.
