Karnataka Minister Visits UT to Study Government Schemes for Construction Industry workers

PUDUCHERRY: Karnataka Labour minister P T Parameshwar Naik on Monday called on welfare minister P Rajavelu and learnt about the policies and welfare programmes implemented by the government for construction workers in the Union Territory.

A power point presentation was shown to him by officials of Labour department in the chamber of the welfare minister. Subsequently, Naik called on Chief Minister N Rangasamy accompanied by the welfare minister. Speaker of the territorial Assembly V Sabapathy was also present on the occasion.

Later, interacting with media, Naik said Karnataka has a good number of migrant workers. “Yuva Yuga centres would be opened in every district of Karnataka to provide training and enhance skills of youth to help them get employment. The scheme, planned at an outlay of `10 crore, was announced in the budget by the Karnataka Chief Minister. Around 5,000 to 6,000 youth would be given training annually with priority on enhancing their language and communication skills,” Naik said.

Four Karnataka-German Multi Skill Development Centres would be opened at Hubli, Belgaum, Mangalore and Bellary as part of the government’s plans to open 100 such centres in the State. Two technical training institutes have already been opened in Bangalore and Gulbarga respectively. Short term training programmes for three, six and nine months are being introduced in addition to the two-year training programme, he said. The institutes train a cross section of people, from ITI certificate holders to diploma holders in engineering, graduates and postgraduates, Naik said.

Under the Rashtriya Swastha Bima Yojana, 63 lakh BPL families have been enrolled and issued smart cards. The government plans to enroll 1.8 crore BPL familes under the scheme, Naik said.
