COIMBATORE:A 37-year-old undertrial prisoner has alleged that officials of the Coimbatore Central prison had issued a threat to his life and assaulted him, causing a leg to break.

A petition in this regard was moved on Monday before Third Additional Subordinate Judge A Muraleetharan, who directed that he be treated at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

On June 12, the officials took the prisoner, I Basheer, of GM Nakgar, Ukkadam, who was allegedly caught with a mobile phone, into the office of the Prison Superintendent and they assaulted him with lathis. Though injured, he was denied medical treatment, his lawyer, S Stalin, told Express.

Basheer known as “Thakkali” Basheer, as he was a tomato seller once, had been booked for a brawl inside a bar in 2012. The verdict in the case, being heard by the Second Additional Subordinate Judge, was to be delivered on Monday. However, as the judge was absent, he was produced before Judge A Muraleedharan.

The family was not allowed to visit Basheer, according to his wife, B Sulekha. When they spoke to him in the court on Monday, Basheer had told them that he had been kept under solitary confinement for three days. The officials had also refused to produce him in court, but were forced to do so on Monday, when his case had been posted for hearing.

On being shown the extent of Basheer’s injuries, Judge Muraleedharan directed the prisoner to be admitted to CMCH for treatment. The next hearing of this case, which has been forwarded to the Third Additional Sessions Judge, will be on June 22.
